2023 was an exceptional year for Montgomery Village recreational amenities, including the opening of two brand-new parks, as well as some needed repairs and refurbishments to some of our existing parks. If you missed any of the announcements, read on for a summary of this year’s progress, as we look forward to another great year for parks in 2024.

David B. Humpton Park and dog park – One of MVF’s newest parks opened on Friday, May 26, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. The park’s opening was phase one of the Central Park development on the Bloom property, and includes a brand-new playground, two separate dog parks for big and small dogs and a parking lot. Phase two is set to be complete sometime in 2025 and will have community gardens, green space and walking paths.

Watkins Mill Recreation Area – The fitness park opened in July and creates a new experience for residents that includes a full outdoor gym on the property. The gym includes multiple ADA accessible pieces; pieces that promote fitness for all levels; a fitness rig for a full-body workout in one place; and an elliptical and upright bike for cardio fitness. This gym is covered by a large fabric shade structure to provide some protection from the elements. The original playground was relocated to be closer to the gym, and trees, shrubs and a 4-foot-high fence were added. The park also has overhead lighting and a 10-foot-wide exercise path.

Apple Ridge Recreation Area – The tennis courts at Apple Ridge were also renovated this year with the refurbishment of one tennis court to four Pickleball courts due to the rising popularity of the sport. The courts underwent repairs to address existing wear and tear and smoothing the surface for safe playing. A comprehensive refurbishment of the basketball court also underwent a thorough milling process, followed by resurfacing and painting. As part of the refurbishment, new basketball backboards and hoops were installed.

Watkins Mill and North Creek Community Center Lighting – In Spring 2023, MVF installed LED lights at the sports courts at Watkins Mill and North Creek Community Center. These lights are on a push-button system, increasing their energy efficiency.
